AFI - December underground

29 juni 2006
I don’t think there was ever a band that could get away with what A.F.I. did on ‘sing the sorrow’. Sheer brilliance and sublime songwriting made, almost, everyone forget about A.F.I.’s hardcore/punk past. Too bad…too sad..but that’s definitely gone and buried. Anyways Davey and co. are MEGA sellers worldwide and are worshipped by thousands of fans. From hardcore-kids through new wavers, from punkrockers to Alternative fans, A.F.I. became stars and are on the brink of world domination with ‘December underground’. On a personal level, I think Davey and friends are looking like sad drag queens on a bad carnival day…make-up belongs to glamrock…but I guess it fits to their music. Melodic, dramatic, addictive… ‘December underground’ is a new step in their career and will get them more trophy’s you can take that to the bank! It’s hip to be emo and cry about everything…the modern sadness…oh god…what happened to punkrock? But to my surprise A.F.I. is getting away with it, again... Davey has an amazing voice and the other musicians are definitely to good to play in a punkrock/hardcore band. This new record, again, has a soundtrack vibe to it and has the ‘perfect’ production and can best be listened to with a headphone and your eyes closed. The intro ‘Prelude 12/2’ made me think about the ‘Edward scissorhands soundtrack’ for some reason…or maybe that’s because mr. Havoc tries so desperately to get that same look going ;) The first single ‘Miss murder’ is a good introduction to the rest of the album and will make emo kids go wet worldwide. Normally I would hate intermezzo’s like ‘unlisted’, but it works, it just works… ‘Summer Shudder’, ‘Love like winter’ and ‘The killing light‘ are amazing, nothing more, nothing less. Conclusion: Open your minds, you’ll love this. oh yeah...opinions may vary...I know.
