Sick Of It All - Death to tyrants
Always curious to see what a hardcore institute like SIOA comes up with next.
This is the band’s 8 official full-length and again the boys managed to do something different. ‘Death to tyrants’ has a gigantic production. Tue Madsen’s responsible for the sound that SOIA was looking for all those years and finally matched their sound on disc to the band’s enormous live reputation. This new album describes itself as a mix of ‘Life on the ropes’ and ‘Scratch the surface’. Songs like ‘Die alone’, ‘Machete’ and ‘Maria white trash’ got me trashing the place old-style, ya know? On the other hand, this is definitely SOIA’s most difficult album to date… gotta listen a few times to ‘get’ this record.
Lyrically ‘Death to tyrants’ mainly focuses on the current political issues and problems in the US, not that strange, since the NY-based band has always been about speaking up and talking about politics, poverty, fighting racism…whatever. It shows the band’s interest in a world that’s turning worse every day.
I admit, I’m a sucker for the pre- ‘Call to arms’ period and still consider ‘Blood, sweat and no tears’ as one of the best hardcore records of all time. Unfortunately, ‘Death to tyrants’ is my least favo record of the yanks. I hate to admit it, but it lacks other genius songs like the ones I mentioned earlier in this review. I’m sure it’s just me and I’m a nag, but I like SOIA playing more old-school related material.
So should you buy this one? Yes! Don’t listen to an old-fart who dwells on nostalgia, the dragon is still reigning!
Score: 83/100
